MANNA is located at an altitude of 1200m. on Mount Mainalo and is housed in a historic listed building of unique architecture, which has been declared a protected monument. It dates back to 1929 and is known as ”The Sanatorium of Mana”. The building was named after Anna Mela, sister of the Macedonian warrior Pavlos Mela, who was also the creator of the sanatorium. For this reason, she received financial assistance from wealthy Greeks in Egypt and America. Anna Mela was an aristocrat of the time, who dedicated her life and fortune to the treatment of wounded soldiers and patients with tuberculosis. Due to her absolute devotion to the patients, as well as her extensive philanthropy, she was characterized as ”The Soldier’s Mother”. The sanatorium took its name from there. {Booking now here}

MANNA operated as a sanatorium until 1938. The abundant fresh air due to the altitude and the dense forest was an ideal factor for the treatment of patients at that time. Then, with the introduction of penicillin as a treatment for tuberculosis, the sanatorium was closed, looted, and then abandoned. MANNA is an emblematic building of neoclassical influences, with cornices and gables. Built by Lagkadi craftsmen of the time who were renowned stone craftsmen and with designs by the architect Xenophon Angelides, it was constructed with reinforced concrete slabs, gray limestone stone and floors of wood and mosaic, which are preserved to this day. After the sanatorium was closed and looted, its precious stone sills were scattered in newer constructions, while its wooden roof was removed and re-applied in its entirety in a hospital in Tripoli. {Booking now here}
